Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed?

One of the most common reasons for tooth extraction is to treat an impacted wisdom tooth. When the third molar does not have room to properly erupt, it can cause pain, dental crowding, infection, and other serious dental problems. If you are experiencing complications due to an impacted molar or need to remove your wisdom teeth for preventive health reasons, Dr. Robert Berger and Dr. Deidre Berger Crockett can perform effective, comfortable wisdom teeth removalBerger Dental Group has proudly served the Columbia and Elgin, SC, communities since 1969. Our office can perform nearly every dental procedure under one roof.

Symptoms of an Impacted Tooth

Third molars are especially susceptible to impaction since they often emerge in early adulthood. By then, given the presence of the other adult teeth, the molar either partially emerges or never erupts at all. Many of our Columbia patients seek wisdom teeth removal to address unpleasant symptoms. Common dental problems that result from an impacted wisdom tooth include:

  • Tooth decay
  • Teeth crowding
  • Complications for orthodontic treatments
  • Jaw pain
  • Swollen gums
  • Gum disease
  • Damage to nearby teeth

During your visit to our Berger Dental Group, one of our doctors will examine your impacted teeth before recommending a suitable treatment. Often, the only effective treatment for impacted wisdom teeth is tooth extraction.

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal

There are many benefits to removing wisdom teeth. If you are experiencing discomfort, teeth crowding, or gum disease because of one or more impacted wisdom teeth, our doctors can restore your oral health through a straightforward extraction procedure.

Patients who undergo wisdom teeth removal can enjoy restored oral health and the prevention of future dental problems.

Even if your wisdom teeth are asymptomatic, there are still many oral health and cosmetic benefits to safely removing the third molars. When wisdom teeth fully erupt, they are hard to clean. Also, the molars can complicate orthodontic treatments by causing dental crowding that can reverse cosmetic results.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction: Procedure Overview

To ensure you are relaxed and comfortable throughout your procedure, our office offers oral and IV sedation options. Local anesthesia will also be used to ensure that the extraction area is numbed. As the first step, the doctor will make an incision in your gums. The tooth may need to be separated into smaller pieces for easier removal. Once your tooth is safely removed, dissolvable sutures will be used to close the incision and gauze will be placed to control bleeding

Patients will need to arrange for someone to drive them home after the procedure. Patients should rest for the remainder of the day. Some patients can return to normal activities the day after surgery. Full recovery can take up to two weeks. One of our doctors will provide recovery guidelines that should be followed closely.
